Sculpture Installation of Saint Benedict

The Historic Churches Committee granted Worth Abbey permission to install a sculpture commemorating the 50th anniversary of our church.

Inspired and partly funded by the LCSB (Lay Community of St Benedict), and created  by Richard Watts, son of the church artist Peter Watts FRBS, the sculpture is crafted from Portland stone, matching our altar, ambo, and font. Richard, inspired by Christian spirituality, poetry, and biblical texts, specializes in figurative carving and lettering in stone and wood.

The sculpture, measuring 1500mm (H) × 600mm (W) × 250mm (T), has been installed midway on the stairs beneath the oculus, encouraging reflection before entering the Abbey. It is recessed into the wall with flush brickwork margins and anchored with stainless steel ties.
