“The Church recognises the personal dignity and rights of children to whom it has a special responsibility and a duty of care. The Church, and individual members of it, undertakes to do all in their power to create a safe environment for children and to prevent their physical, sexual and emotional abuse. The Church authorities will liaise closely with statutory agencies to ensure that any allegations of abuse are promptly and properly dealt with, victims supported and perpetrators held to account”. (Nolan Report, September 2001).

On July 1st 2008 the Catholic Safeguarding Advisory Service (CSAS) came into being, replacing the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (COPCA). CSAS is the principal source of information concerning safeguarding policies and procedures used within the Catholic Church of England and Wales.
