Season of Creation 1st September – 4th October 2021

Season of Creation 2021: A home for all? Renewing the Oikos of God

What is Oikos?

The Season of Creation runs from 1 September (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) to 4 October (the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi) each year. The day is inspired by Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls on “every person living on this planet” to care for our shared Earth.  During this season we are encouraged to pray in order to deepen our relationship with our God, our neighbour and the earth we share, being ever more attentive to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.

On the occasion of the sixth anniversary of Laudato Si’, the Dicastery of Human Development invites us to join the ecumenical family in celebrating the Season of Creation. This year’s symbol, Abraham’s tent, signifies our commitment to safeguard a place for all who share our common home, just as Abraham did in the Book of Genesis.

We are urged to sign the “Healthy Planet, Healthy People” petition as a key action for this year’s Season of Creation. This petition has been endorsed by the Vatican Dicastery for Integral Human Development in the hope that millions of Catholics will raise their voices in the public sphere to help Restore Our Common Home in the run up to these vital UN Conferences.  5 Reasons to sign the petition.

Prayer for the Season of Creation 2021

Creator of All, We are grateful that from your communion of love you created our planet to be a home for us all. By your Holy Wisdom you made the Earth to bring forth a diversity of living beings that filled the soil, water and air. Each part of creation praised you in their being, and cares for one another from our place in the web of life.

Enlighten us with the grace to respond to your covenant and call to care for our common home. In our tilling and keeping, gladden our hearts to know that we participate with your Holy Spirit to renew the face of your Earth, and safeguard a home for all. In the name of the One who came to proclaim good news to all creation, Jesus Christ. Amen
