News footage and information coming out about what is happening in Afghanistan has been truly shocking and it is hard to imagine the desperation of those needing to escape and not being able to leave the country.
Refugees Welcome Crawley (RWC) is working in partnership with West Sussex County Council, Sussex Aid for Refugees and other charities involved locally to meet the needs of Afghan families and individuals arriving with nothing. WSCC are co-ordinating this task and will deliver the donations to the Afghan refugees and asylum seekers in quarantine and awaiting the processing of their cases by the Home Office.
If you would like to help and are able to do so, there are a number of ways you can do this:
Sussex Aid for Refugees has a wish list from which, if you feel able to help, you can purchase toiletries and other items for Afghan arrivals in Sussex. There is a particular push for soap for the hygiene packs being made up today.
The list of required items is changing daily and the need is great. RWC has been asked specifically to supply pyjamas.
If anyone can help with traditional Afghan-style dress (shalwar kamiz, headscarves) that would also be good.
Items must be clean (washed and ironed) and new or good-as-new.
If you have men’s or women’s pyjamas which you can donate, these can be dropped off at our office (address below) on Thursday 2nd Sept between 2 and 4pm.
They can also be brought to the Balcombe tea/walk this Saturday, Sept 4th,if you are attending that event.
Otherwise, you can make a contribution to our funds which will enable us to buy pyjamas or other needed items in bulk.
You can do this by paying directly into the RWC bank account (please use reference Afghan refugees) or through Justgiving which will enable you to directly Gift Aid your donation. Please be aware that your donation may be used to support the needs of refugees and asylum seekers from other countries if there is any surplus once the needs of Afghans have been met.

Our focus is on short-term emergency aid at the current time. In the coming months and over the next five years, we may also be called upon to help resettle Afghan families arriving in the Crawley area on any of the Afghan Resettlement Schemes, in a similar way to our support for Syrian families.
With many thanks for your ongoing support
