What is the SVP?
The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is an international organisation of Catholic lay people founded in Paris in 1883 by Frederic Ozanam. The Society is inspired by the thinking and work of St Vincent de Paul who saw the poor as his masters and himself as their servant. The motto of the SVP is 'turning concern into action' and looks to be active in society through personal interaction. There are several conferences (groups of SVP volunteers) in the Diocese and throughout the UK. Worldwide the SVP is found in over 140 countries with over 700,000 volunteers.

What do we do?
The Worth Abbey Conference meets every fortnight to identify those in need, bringing hope, friendship, support and encouragement, with the aim of trying to improve the quality of lives. Through personal contact, members help thos who may suffer loneliness and isolation in society. The SVP serves all of society, whilst being Catholic in tradition. Examples of practical help include home visits, visits to those in care or lifts to Mass. This may be on a short-term basis or over a number of years. |
